In our ongoing Collector Spotlight series, we’re taking a closer look at collections and their collectors! This week, we’re featuring Ravna, better known to her Twitter followers as @RavnaofErebor.
Ravna is always happy to see the photos we share on our @CollectTolkien feed–whether they’re our own or from other Tolkien collectors. She really helps bring a sense of community to our little group on Twitter, with always a kind word or a dwarven hug!
We have always enjoyed seeing photos of her own personal Tolkien collection, and now, we’re lucky enough to share more of her photos alongside an Q&A she graciously answered for us!
When did you first discover Tolkien?
I discovered the magical world of Tolkien as a child reading The Hobbit and watched theanimated movie when it came out back in the day!! I’ve always loved the dwarven side of Tolkien’s creations. I feel a real kinship with them. (Although I rather tall 5’9″ for a Dwarrow Dame).
Do you remember what was your first Tolkien item?
Oh yes, indeed, as though it were yesterday!!! My first Tolkien purchases where the Key to Erebor and a Thorin action figure. I will never forget that amazing day when I received the Key to Erebor. I imagined it to be how Thorin felt when Gandalf rolled the key around his fingers in Bag End! From there it was Thorin’s pipe then ‘life size’ cut out to my most expensive splurge (but a MUST have) Orcrist and it has not stopped (nor will it).
When did you first realize/decide that you were a Tolkien collector?
About two years, to be honest. I just became addicted and what a lovely addiction this is!!
How do you decide what you want to collect?
At first, I only collected anything Thorin related…his Key…pipe…action figures… But then I began to expand. The addiction has grown for anything from jewlery to handmade items. I decided I wanted to make “themed” shelves as my collection grew (I’ll talk more about that later). That is one of the reasons I love your site! Seeing all of my fellow collectors and their beautiful collections shows me all the wonderful treasures I still have yet to collect.
Tell us about your collection and some of your favorite items!
*Breaks into the ” Dwarvenized” version of Ariel’s song* “Look at this stuff, isn’t it neat…” LOL!
My collection consists of treasures untold from items purchased to my most ‘precious’ ones that are handmade. You asked me about the teapot–that find came to live with us as part of my ‘themed’ shelves I am assembling. Each shelf will belong to a particular character (yes, I am more than likely to have four or five Thorins), with a map, photo, calendar, or poster as the background.
The teapot is part of the ‘Shire Shelf’. I try and add bits and bobs that are a part of the story, such as my tiny treasure box filled with acorns or a lovely butterfly I found on the ground (already perished).
I am in the process of making the Durin’s Linage tapestry. I am hoping to have it complete by Christmas. Wish me luck!
I also have a very special gift my daughter made me–a Dwarven cup. (Yes, your eyes are not deceiving you; those are naked dwarves behind it–another of my treasures purchased!!)
The one item that I would save from a burning building would have to be the picture be the picture of Ravna and Thorin. It is my most treasured collection because it is a one of a kind. It was made just for Ravna. I love the way Thorin’s eyes gleam as he looks at her.
Which character do you most identify with and why? Do you own any items related to that character?
*Quirks brow and looks around room* Hmmm, I would say that would have to be Thorin for sure. *Slight crimson hue brushes across her cheeks*
He dominates my collection–happily! I created @RavnaofErebor RP character because she, like her scribe, is madly devoted to the King under the mountain. My bedroom, what is affectionately called around our house as ‘ the Kingdom of Erebor’, was inspired by @heatherbeamatz and her beautiful Erebor themed bedroom. I wanted to create my own Tolkien hide away. *hearts to Heather*
What are some Tolkien collectibles that are still on your wishlist?
Dwarven swords are next on my list to acquire… ‘Deathless’ is first on the list, then of course the Royal Regal Sword of the King… followed by Fili and Kili’s swords.
What do your friends and family think of your collection? How do you explain to non-collectors or non-Tolkien fans why you collect?
My family and friends love taking the ride with me. Everyone is always so excited to see what new item is coming to live in Erebor with me. Some of my favorite memories are the time I took Cutout Thorin to work and my co workers took ‘selfies’ with him–what a HOOT!
Or when I took Smaug in early one day, and we (he and I) posted all sorts of pictures of him around the office!! And who knew the firedrake was such an excellent child minder…
But my most favorite is my sweet Fili, whom most of you know from my posts…I love sharing with the ‘next generation’. Whenever a package arrives, he waits til I get home from work and greets me with the biggest smile “The lady at the door brought us another treasure for ‘OUR COLLECTION'”… just makes my heart swell!!
What’s one thing that non-collectors probably never understand?
That would be the ‘Fellowship’ that bonds Tolkien fans together…and the amazing friendships that have been forged between us all.
Which items to you have multiples of and why do you want more than one?
*Looks about her Kingdom of Erebor and just sighs as her heart thumps*
Where do you go to find items for your Tolkien collection?
I wish there were local shops. *Arches brow, twists mouth* Well, perhaps my coin pouch would not appreciate that!!
Thanks so much to Ravna for participating in this Collector Spotlight!
